In the 2016 report from doctors of the world association (medecins du monde), only 13,7% have declared fleeing a war. This survey has been held in Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Greece, Spain, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, UK. Most of the time, refugees said they came to Europe for economical reasons (53,1%). The survey is based on people’s declarations which can be lies. From what I have observed in the field, some refugees make up stories to ensure they will earn the right to stay in the destination country. This may explain why 54.5% of interviewees in Switzerland said they fled a war as the local immigration policies are tight. In any country, it is worth saying you fleed a war to get the political asylum status. That’s why we think this is a pretty good number.
In the following table from the report, you can see the different reasons (in French) and percentage for every country.
